Photography, Memories & Gender

This talk was co-organized by Leo Gallery, and invited photography scholar Gu Zheng, art critic Lin Ye and artist Cai Dongdong to have a dialogue. Through the juxtaposition of " Chinese contemporary photography", "collective memories" and " gender issue", our guests discussed the development of contemporary Chinese photography, the relationship between memory and gender, to reveal the story behind photography and art.



Lin Ye
Lin Ye is a translator and writer. He is mainly engaged in the research and translation of visual culture. His translation works include Hiroshi Sugimoto’s collected works, “Origins of Art”, “Phenomenon”, “50 Years of Japanese Photography” as well as selected translation work, “History of Japanese Art Photography”.

Cai Dongdong
Cai Dongdong was born in Tianshui, Gansu Province in 1978. He studied at Beijing Film Academy in 2002, currently lives and works in Beijing, China and Berlin, Germany. His artistic creations include photography, installation, video and social art practice.

Gu Zheng
Professor Gu Zheng was born in Shanghai in 1959 and is currently a faculty member of Fudan University at the School of Journalism, the researcher at the Center for Information and Communication Studies, and the deputy director at the Visual Culture Research Center. In 1998, he graduated from the Department of Human Culture Studies at Osaka Prefecture University in Japan with a Ph.D diploma. He is also the Harvard Yanjing visiting scholar in 2017-18. Prof. Gu mainly focuses on the 20th century modern art, contemporary Chinese documentary photography, visual culture and image communication research, and photography history.

Lin Ye
Lin Ye is a translator and writer. He is mainly engaged in the research and translation of visual culture. His translation works include Hiroshi Sugimoto’s collected works, “Origins of Art”, “Phenomenon”, “50 Years of Japanese Photography” as well as selected translation work, “History of Japanese Art Photography”. His articles were published in Ray Art Center, Tencent Gu Yu (腾讯·谷雨), The Paper, ArtChina, ARTFORUM, Chinese Photography and other medias.

Cai Dongdong
Cai Dongdong was born in Tianshui, Gansu Province in 1978. He studied at Beijing Film Academy in 2002, currently lives and works in Beijing, China and Berlin, Germany. His artistic creations include photography, installation, video and social art practice. He was awarded The First Prize of 3rd Terna Award for Contemporary Art Award, Italy, and TOP 20 Young Photographers - 2015 China Contemporary Photography, China.
